Interview with Jonatan Habib Engqvist, curator and writer

Under 2015 startar projektet Curatorial Residency in Stockholm (CRIS) i gästateljén. Under tre perioder kommer curators att vistas i ateljén och möta Stockholms konstliv. Bakom projektet står NKF tillsammans med Jonatan Habib Engqvist, curator och skribent. Utöver CRIS undervisar han idag på flera nordiska konsthögskolor och skriver för en rad kulturtidskrifter. Tidigare har han arbetat på Moderna Museet och Iaspis. Här berättar han i en intervju mer om projektet i gästateljén.
- Vad betyder en verksamhet som Nordiska gästateljén Malongen för konstscenen i Stockholm?
Nordiska gästateljén håller på att bli en viktig plats för det lokala konstlivet genom sitt öppna samarbete med olika konstinstitutioner och organisationer i Stockholm. Det är en självorganiserad plattform med flexibel och tillåtande atmosfär där det finns plats för både etablerade aktörer och enskilda initiativ under samma tak. Det här är rätt förutsättningar för att skapa ett gemensamt samtal där den konstnärliga verksamheten hela tiden står i centrum.
- Varför Curator in Residence?
Curatorial Residency In Stockholm (CRIS) är en naturlig fortsättning på något som Nordiska konstförbundet (NKF) har jobbat med en längre tid. Som ett led i att utveckla det nordiska och internationella nätverket ges nu möjligheten för curatorer att bo i centrala Stockholm under en kort period för att fördjupa sig i Stockholms konstscen. Det är ont om platser där curatorer kan vistas utan att behöva producera ett projekt eller en utställning.
- Finns det liknande program på andra platser?
Inte i Stockholm. Det finns lite olika sorters Curator-In-Residence program runt om i världen och alla har lite olika förutsättningar. Det som är speciellt med den här situationen är att curatorn inte behöver följa ett program eller framställa något under sin vistelse. CRIS har även en implicit icke-hierarkisk struktur eftersom initiativet kommer från en självorganiserad verksamhet samtidigt som varje vistelse bygger på unika samarbeten mellan olika personer och institutioner. Det krävs en gemensam ansträngning för att finanserna ska gå ihop vilket också betyder att alla tar gemensamt ansvar för gästen.
- Vilka curators kommer till Malongen?
Under 2015 kommer totalt tre curatorer att bo på Malongen. Med stöd från Spanska ambassaden i Stockholm i februari kommer den frilansande curator Eva González-Sancho. Hon har tidigare varit chef och curator på Frac Bourgogne, Etablissement d’en face i Bryssel och drivit konstnärsresidens. Hon har gjort stora utställningar med bl.a. Dora García, Guillaume Leblon, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Lara Almarcegui, Jonas Dahlberg, Katrin Sigurdardottir, och Matthew Buckingham. 2013 var hon tillsammans med Anne Szefer Karlsen and Bassam El Baroni en av curatorerna för Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF).
- Vad tänker du att hon ska göra under sin vistelse här?
Hon kommer ge en presentation på CuratorLab på Konstfack och vi har bett henne hålla i en publik föreläsning på Malongen. Annars är tanken att hon ska kunna ägna sig åt förutsättningslös research och träffa konstnärer som jobbar i Stockholm. Tillsammans med Per-Gunnar Eeg-Tverbakk har hon precis fått uppdraget att utveckla ett pilotprojekt för en biennal i Oslo, så jag kan tänka mig att hon kommer fundera en del kring detta. Hon är också intresserad av frågor som berör det offentliga rummet och nyfiken på den svenska konstscenen i allmänhet.

2015 will be the starting point for the project Curatorial Residency in Stockholm (CRIS). During three residency periods, curators will be invited to stay at the studio and meet the Stockholm art scene. The project is a collaboration between the Nordic Art Association in Sweden and Jonatan Habib Engqvist, curator and writer. Jonathan teaches in several Nordic art academies and writes for a number of cultural magazines. Previously, he has worked at the Moderna Museet and Iaspis. Following is an interview about the projekt.
- What does a project like the Nordic guest studio Malongen mean for the art scene in Stockholm?
The Nordic guest studio is becoming an important place for the local art scene through its open cooperation with different art institutions and organisations in Stockholm. It is a self-organized platform with a flexible and tolerant atmosphere where there is room for both established players and individual initiatives under one roof. These are the proper conditions to create a common conversation in which the artistic activity is in focus at all times.
- Why Curator in Residence?
Curatorial Residency in Stockholm (CRIS) is a natural continuation the work that the Nordic Art Association (NKF) has been doing for a long time. As part of the further development of Nordic and international networks NKF now provides the opportunity for curators to stay in central Stockholm for a short period of time to immerse themselves in the local art scene. There are few places where curators can reside without having to produce a project or an exhibition.
- Are there similar programs in other places?
Not in Stockholm. There are different kinds of Curator-in-Residence programs around the world and all of them have slightly different requirements. What is special about this situation is that the curator does not have to follow a program or produce anything during their stay. CRIS also has an implicit non-hierarchical structure since the initiative comes from self-organized activities, while every residency is based on unique collaborations between individuals and institutions. It requires a common effort to finance it, which also means that all take joint responsibility for the guest.
- Which curators will visit the studio in 2015?
During 2015, a total of three curators will stay at the guest-studio. With support from the Spanish embassy in Stockholm we have invited the freelance curator Eva González-Sancho in February. She has previously was director and curator at the Frac Bourgogne, Etablissement d’en face in Brussels and has managed an artist’s residency. She has organised several major exhibitions including presentations of Dora García, Guillaume Leblon, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Lara Almarcegui, Jonas Dahlberg, Katrín Sigurdardottir, and Matthew Buckingham. In 2013 she was, together with Anne Szefer Karlsen and Bassam El Baroni, one of the curators of the Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF).
- What do you think she should do during their stay here?
She will give a presentation at CuratorLab, Konstfack, and we have asked her to give a public lecture at the guest studio. Otherwise, the idea is that she should be able to engage in open-ended research and meet artists who work in Stockholm. Together with Per-Gunnar Eeg-Tverbakk she has just been commissioned to develop a pilot project for a future Biennial in Oslo, so I can imagine that she will be engaging in these matters. She is also interested in issues that affect the public domain and very curious about the Swedish art scene in general.
