:CRIS is happy to announce locus athens (GR) curators Maria-Thalia Carras and Olga Hatzidaki as curators in residence at the Nordic Guest Studio in January 2019.

Maria-Thalia Carras is the founder and co-director of locus athens, a non-profit contemporary arts organization based in Athens with a special interest in public space and a focus on commissions based on investigations into the historical, political and cultural complexities of Athens, Greece and the broader region. As a curator and writer her interests lie in research in public space, film, and the ever increasing urgency of ecological issues.

Olga Hatzidaki is a curator and cultural producer based in Athens, Greece. Her ongoing practice revolves around the various artistic formats and tools that can be used to touch upon sensitive social issues and the ever increasing climate violence. Since 2012, Olga is co-directing locus athens, a nomadic non-profit organization, acting as agency in various spaces around Athens.

locus athens is an independent contemporary arts organization based in Athens run by Maria-Thalia Carras and Olga Hatzidaki. The program revolves around its interest in the public sphere: from forgotten spaces and public buildings, to small private institutions and interesting localities – in dialogue always with the transformational potential of contemporary art. Just some of the places that have been activated by locus athens in recent years are the Tzisdaraki mosque in central Athens, the cruise ship terminal in Piraeus port, schools, office buildings, Monastiraki square, the Doxiadis Schools and numerous anonymous sites around the city.

locus athens has consistently sought to comission new productions based on investigations into the historical, political and cultural complexities of Athens, Greece and the broader region. Its program includes exhibitions, talks, screenings, workshops, publications, children’s books, residencies and community projects. They are constantly seeking to enrich our activities by expanding locus athens curatorial approach and by bringing contemporary art in dialogue with a broader audience.

locus athens was founded in 2004 by Maria-Thalia Carras and Sophia Tournikiotis. www.locusathens.com
