Adiacenze is a curatorial space dedicated to the exploration of contemporary art. Established in Bologna in 2010, its mission is to foster the development of emerging artists through innovative, site-specific projects. Quickly gaining recognition as a pivotal player in the national contemporary art landscape, Adiacenze has been showcasing the works of emerging and mid-career artists from both national and international spheres.

Guided by a distinctive curatorial approach, Adiacenze collaborates closely with artists, supporting them throughout their creative journey from conceptualization to exhibition setup. By nurturing an environment of research and experimentation, Adiacenze empowers artists to push boundaries and explore new artistic territories.

Adiacenze's diverse range of activities includes an exhibition program and a series of public events such as talks, performances, lectures, workshops, and presentations hosted in its space in Bologna. Additionally, Adiacenze has partnered with renowned national and international institutions, including the Italian Institues of Culture in Madrid and Oslo, MAMbo - Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, National Gallery of Rome, Fondazione Rocca dei Bentivoglio, AMaC Unibo, Dep. Visual Arts Bologna, CRICC - Research center for the cultural and creative industry, DHMoRe - Research center on digital humanities, Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and in Milan, Robot Festival, Digicult, DEMO Moving Image Festival (UK), KOMA Gallery (Belgium), Hordaland Kunstsenter (Bergen) CUBO Unipol.

Since 2018, Adiacenze has also curated the exhibition program at Casa della Cultura "Italo Calvino" in Calderara di Reno, and in 2020, it launched Prospettive, a network of artist residencies sponsored by Regione Emilia-Romagna across various cities. In 2022, Adiacenze initiated SWAP, an exchange art residency project in collaboration with the city of Bergen, Norway, supported by the European Union, the Italian Cultural Institute of Oslo, and the City of Bergen.

Amerigo Mariotti (b. 1978) and Giorgia Tronconi (b. 1996) are curators and directors of Adiacenze, an art center based in Bologna committed to the exploration and production of contemporary art. Amerigo Mariotti, with a background in Architecture, founded Adiacenze in 2010, and Giorgia Tronconi joined the team in 2020. Holding a BA in Graphic Design & Art Direction from NABA in Milan and an MA in Visual Arts from the University of Bologna, Giorgia Tronconi brings diverse expertise to their collaborative approach.

The duo's curatorial philosophy is research-based and experimentation-driven. It centers on multidisciplinary practices, emphasizing artists who challenge the contemporary landscape, probing its intricacies and potentials. Their work involves organizing exhibitions and public programs within the Adiacenze space, implementing residency programs at both regional and international levels.

They operate across diverse media, prioritizing a collaborative approach with artists and cultivating a network of skills and knowledge to support and stimulate their research by encouraging cross-disciplinary interactions. Their dynamic curatorial practice not only engages with the current challenges of contemporaneity but also seeks to reimagine it from fresh perspectives, envisioning potential future scenarios.

SWAP is an international art residency and exhibition project that aims to activate and promote cultural exchange and creative cooperation through the involvement of Italian and international artists. The project is curated by Amerigo Mariotti and Giorgia Tronconi of Adiacenze in collaboration with Manuel Portioli, Bergen-based artist and curator. The final objective of SWAP is to offer artists and curators the opportunity to connect and interact with a different cultural, social, geographical and political context through a period of residence aimed at research, experimentation and production of new works resulting from this experience.

SWAP has been developing since 2022 with yearly exchanges between the cities of Bergen and Bologna. So far, Adiacenze has partnered with: Hordaland Kunstsenter, palmera, Bergen Ateliergruppe, Habitat Artspace, Cone 7, Casa della Cultura “Italo Calvino”. SWAP has received the support of the European Union - Goethe Insitut, the Italian Cultural Institute of Oslo, Bergen Kommune, Norwegian Crafts, OCA, Comune di Bologna.

Eventually, Adiacenze wants to create an international network of independent art spaces dedicated to contemporary art that can promote the mobility and intercultural exchange of artists and curators at European level.
