ONCE MORE WITH FEELING
The collaborative process of Sini Pelkki and Emma Hammarén is an exploration of materiality, poetry, and the relationship between the two. While Sini Pelkki is an artist who works primarily with film and photographic image, Emma Hammarén’s practice revolves around poetic language, often in the form of installation. The weeks spent in the studio at Nytorget will be the first time the two artists work in the same city, after years of correspondence: letters, images, film clips and voice recordings sent back and forth. Methods will merge and blur. Into the room the artist will bring necessities and elements of current interest (the colour green, Chantal Akerman, postcards of living rooms, The Works of Archimedes, crisp white paper, Chico Hamilton, the feel of linoleum, a pencil sharpener, a song) and process them together in search of a new composition.
Sini Pelkki is based in Helsinki, Emma Hammarén in Stockholm. The artists have previously exhibited together at Konstnärshuset, Stockholm (Map of a Scene, 2013) and at Sinne, Helsinki (The Nine Lives Museum, 2014). The text DET GÅR INTE ATT GLIDA MJUKT ÖVER EN HÅRD KANT (2014) was written by Hammarén as a variation of Pelkki’s film A Replacement (2013) and presented as a sound (recorded reading) in the gallery space. This piece was later continued in the performance event A Replacement – Interactions and reflections, curated by Sini Pelkki at cafe OTO in London 2019, presenting different versions of the film. Hammarén’s texts are included in Pelkki’s films Sheet No4 (2018), Is All (2021) and Present (2024).
